چکیده

Magnetic monopoles in Yang-Mills-Higgs theory with a non-abelian unbroken gauge group are classified by holomorphic charges in addition to the topological charges familiar from the abelian case. As a result the moduli spaces of monopoles of given topological charge are stratified according to the holomorphic charges. Here the physical consequences of the stratification are explored in the case where the gauge group SU(3) is broken to U(2). The description due to A. Dancer of the moduli space of charge two monopoles is reviewed and interpreted physically in terms of non-abelian magnetic dipole moments. Semi-classical quantisation leads to dyonic states which are labelled by a magnetic charge and a representation of the subgroup of U(2) which leaves the magnetic charge invariant (centraliser subgroup). The key result of this paper is that these states fall into representations of the semi-direct product U(2) ⋉ R. The combination rules (Clebsch-Gordan coefficients) of dyonic states can thus be deduced. Electric-magnetic duality properties of the theory are discussed in the light of our results, and supersymmetric dyonic BPS states which fill the SL(2,Z)-orbit of the basic massive W -bosons are found.

Magnetic bags in hyperbolic space

A magnetic bag is an abelian approximation to a large number of coincident SU(2) BPS monopoles. In this paper we consider magnetic bags in hyperbolic space and derive their Nahm transform from the large charge limit of the discrete Nahm equation for hyperbolic monopoles. An advantage of studying magnetic bags in hyperbolic space, rather than Euclidean space, is that a range of exact charge N hy...

Massive and Massless Monopoles and Duality1

Abstract I review some aspects of BPS magnetic monopoles and of electric-magnetic duality in theories with arbitrary gauge groups. When the symmetry is maximally broken to a U(1)r subgroup, all magnetically charged configurations can be understood in terms of r species of massive fundamental monopoles. When the unbroken group has a non-Abelian factor, some of these fundamental monopoles become ...

On the Quantisation of Su (2) Magnetic Monopole Dynamics

The low-energy classical dynamics of BPS SU (2) magnetic monopoles can be modeled using the geodesic approximation of N. Manton [M]. In this scheme one makes use of the moduli space of static, finite-energy, non-singular solutions (A, Φ) to the Bogomol'nyi equations on R 3 , 1 2 ǫ ijk F A jk = D A i Φ. The Lie algebra-valued gauge potential A and Higgs field Φ are both in the adjoint representa...

Monopoles, gauge fields and de Rham’s theorems

The topology assumed by most authors for a spacelike hypersurface in a spacetime containing a monopole is generally R3−{0}; save for the surface S2 isolating the monopole, this space is unbounded. For such a topology, a consistency relation of de Rham’s theorems shows that a single isolated monopole cannot exist. Monopoles, with charge ±m, if they exist at all, must occur in pairs having opposi...

Abelian Magnetic Monopoles and Topologically Massive Vector Bosons in Scalar-Tensor Gravity with Torsion Potential

A Lagrangian formulation describing the electromagnetic interaction mediated by topologically massive vector bosons between charged, spin1 2 fermions with an abelian magnetic monopole in a curved spacetime with non-minimal coupling and torsion potential is presented. The covariant field equations are obtained. The issue of coexistence of massive photons and magnetic monopoles is addressed in th...
